What Was On Top?

Lipps Inc was on top for a third consecutive week with their big hit song "Funkytown." The song was written and produced by Steven Greenberg and sung by Cynthia Johnson

The songs at #2 and #3 were held at bay. "Coming Up" by Paul McCartney stayed in the second position and Ambrosia stayed in the third spot with their second top ten hit "Biggest Part Of Me."

"The Rose" by Bette Midler moved up from #6 to #4. Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band also climbed two spots from #7 to #5 with "Against The Wind" - the band's third top five hit.

What Were The Big Movers?

The biggest mover within the top 40 was "Tired Of Toein' The Line" by Rocky Burnette. It moved up eight positions from #34 to #26. Three other songs made big jumps into the top 40. They were "One Fine Day" by Carole King (#45 to #29), "Magic" by Olivia Newton-John (#50 to #36), and "More Love" by Kim Carnes (#65 to #37).

Carnes' 28 notch jump was the biggest jump by any song on the chart for the week. Other double-digit climbers below the top 40 included "Gimme Some Lovin'" by the Blues Brothers, "Stand By Me" by Mickey Gilley (both remakes), "Misunderstanding" by Genesis, "In America" by the Charlie Daniels Band, and "Take Your Time (Do It Right)" by the S.O.S Band.

The song with the biggest drop for the week was the duet between Andy Gibb and Olivia Newton-John. "I Can't Help It" fell 36 notches from #26 down to #60.

What Was New?

A whopping 14 songs debuted on the chart for the week. Meco had the highest debut at #68 with his take on music from "The Empire Strikes Back."

Future top ten songs the debuted were "Let My Love Open The Door" by Pete Townshend, "All Out Of Love" by Air Supply, "Sailing" by Christopher Cross, and "Fame" by Irene Cara. Future top 40 singles new to the chart were "Jojo" by Boz Scaggs, "Into The Night" by Benny Mardones (which would later resurface in 1989), and "Take A Little Rhythm" by Ali Thompson.

The rest of the new songs were "Sweet Sensation" by Stephanie Mills, "I'm Happy Just To Dance With You" by Anne Murray, "Landlord" by Gladys Knight & The Pips, "On The Rebound" by Russ Ballard, "One More Time For Love" by Billy Preston & Syreeta, and "Only The Lonely" by La Flavour.
