What Was On Top?

Paul McCartney spent a second week at the top with his seventh post-Beatles #1 hit "Coming Up." The original release was from his McCartney II album, but a live version of the song eventually became the bigger hit.

The songs at #2 through #4 also remained the same from the previous week. The former #1 "Funkytown" by Lipps Inc paused at #2. "The Rose" by Bette Midler spent a second week at #3, and Billy Joel paused momentarily at #4 with "It's Still Rock N Roll To Me."

Elton John got another top five hit when "Little Jeannie" moved up a spot from #6.

What Were The Big Movers?

The biggest move within the top 40 was a 13-notch jump for the S.O.S. Band from #36 to #23 with"Take Your Time (Do It Right)." "Love The World Away" by Kenny Rogers made a ten-notch leap from #34 to #24.

Three songs made double-digit jumps to reach the top 40 this week, led by "Sailing." The second hit by Christopher Cross climbed from #53 to #34. "The Empire Strikes Back (Medley)" by Meco jumped from #47 to #29 and the solo hit by Pete Townshend, "Let My Love Open The Door," went from #50 to #35.

The overall biggest jump on the chart for the week was made by Linda Ronstadt. "I Can't Let Go" climbed twenty notches from #74 to #54. Other big jumps below the top 40 were made by "Old-Fashion Love" by The Commodores (#75 to #59), "Beyond" by Herb Alpert (#85 to #67), and "Why Not Me" by Fred Knoblock (#87 to #70).

Linda Ronstadt had the biggest jump, but she also had the biggest fall. Her former top ten song "Hurt So Bad" tumbled 54 notches from #26 all the way down to #80.

What Was New?

The Rolling Stones' first hit of the 80's, "Emotional Rescue," made an impressive debut - entering the chart all the way up at #33.

Jackson Browne was back on the chart after a two-year absence when "Boulevard" debuted at #72 and a future top ten song by George Benson, "Give Me The Night," entered at #77.

There were six debut songs for the week and the remaining three were "Years From Now" by Dr. Hook (#82), "Free Me" by Roger Daltrey (#88), and "If I Were You" by Toby Beau.
