What Was On Top?

Paul McCartney's number one hit "Coming Up" spent its third and final week at the top of the charts. The original release was from his McCartney II album, but a live version of the song eventually became the bigger hit.

Billy Joel look poised to take over the top as "It's Still Rock N Roll To Me" moved from #4 to #2. Bette Midler spent her third and final week at #3 with "The Rose" - from the movie starring Midler.

Elton John moved up a notch to #4 with "Little Jeannie," while The Spinners made a nice climb from #8 up to #5 with "Cupid/I've Loved You For A Long Time."

What Were The Big Movers?

"Magic" by Olivia Newton-John made a six notch jump into the top ten from #14 to #8. The Rolling Stones made the biggest jump within the top 40. "Emotional Rescue" climbed eleven notches from #33 to #22 in its second week.

"Sailing" by Christopher Cross made a nice jump of eight spots from #34 to #26.

Three songs made double-digit jumps to reach the top 40. "Take A Little Rhythm" by Ali Thompson moved from #50 to #35. "Into The Night" by Benny Mardones climbed from #47 to #36, and "Old-Fashion Love" by The Commodores made the biggest jump of 22 notches from #59 to #37.

Below the top 40 the second biggest jump was made by Jackson Browne and "Boulevard" which climbed 19 spots from #72 to #53. Double-digit gains were also made by "I Can't Let Go" by Linda Ronstadt, "Drivin' My Life Away" by Eddie Rabbitt, "Why Not Me" by Fred Knoblock, and "One In A Million You" by Larry Graham.

The songs that fell down the chart the furthest both dropped 53 notches. "Atomic" by Blondie fell from #39 to #92 and "Clones (We're All)" by Alice Cooper tumbled from #40 to #93.

What Was New?

The highest debuting song was another hit from the "Urban Cowboy" Soundtrack. "Lookin' For Love" by Johnny Lee bowed in at #67.

The eleven new songs also included the future number one song "Upside Down" by Diana Ross and the future top ten hit "I'm Alright" by Kenny Loggins. Two debut songs that would make the top 40 were "You're The Only Woman" by Ambrosia and "You're Supposed To Keep Your Love For Me" by Jermaine Jackson.

The rest of the new songs were "Save Me" by Dave Mason, "It Hurts Too Much" by Eric Carmen, "Just Can't Wait" by J. Geils Band, "When Things Go Wrong" by Robin Lane & The Chartbusters, "Cheap Sunglasses" by ZZ Top, and "Half Moon Silver" by Hotel.
