What Was On Top?

The first hit by Christopher Cross ("Ride Like The Wind") peaked at #2 - but this week his second single "Sailing" made it all the way to the top of the charts.

Diana Ross surged from #5 up to #2 with the Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards song "Upside Down." After spending four weeks at the top Olivia Newton-John dropped to #3 with "Magic" from the movie "Xanadu."

The Rolling Stones spent their third week at #4 with "Emotional Rescue" and The S.O.S. Band slipped to #5 after peaking at #3 with "Take Your Time (Do It Right)."

What Were The Big Movers?

There were no really moves within the top 40. "Drivin' My Life Away" by Eddie Rabbitt made the biggest jump within the top 40 of seven notches from #23 to #16. Another country crossover hit, "Lookin' For Love" by Johnny Lee climbed six spot from #19 to #13.

There were, however, a few songs that made big leaps to reach the top 40 - led by Queen and "Another One Bites The Dust" jumping 22 notches from #50 to #28. Stephanie Mills moved up twenty from #57 to #37 with "Never Knew Love Like This Before" and the theme from the movie "Xanadu" by Olivia Newton-John and Electric Light Orchestra moved from #43 to #31.

It was Boz Scaggs who made the biggest jump of any song on the chart for the week. "Look What You've Done To Me" from the soundtrack of Urban Cowboy climbed 24 notches from #69 to #45.

A couple songs took the biggest plunge of 32 spots for the week. They were "Darlin'" by Yipes (#68 to #100) and the former top three hit "The Rose" by Bette Midler (#51 to #83).

What Was New?

The highest debuting song of the week was the last of five chart singles for Al Stewart. "Midnight Rocks" entered at #69. The only other new song that would go on to make the top 40 was the classic Devo song "Whip It." It entered at #85.

The rock classic "Lola" by The Kinks re-entered the charts at #88, this time as a live version from the album One For The Road.

The remaining new songs were "Rebels Are We" by Chic (#77), "Leaving L.A." by Deliverance (#81), "Can't We Try" by Teddy Pendergrass (#82), and "My Guy/My Girl" by Amii Stewart & Johnny Bristol (#89).
