What Was On Top?

The Olivia Newton-John hit song "Magic" spent its fourth and final week at number one this week. The song, written and produced by John Farrar, was the singer's fourth number one hit.

There was no movement in the top six songs from the previous week - they all stayed in the same position. Christopher Cross paused momentarily at #2 with "Sailing" and "Take Your Time (Do It Right)" by The S.O.S. Band stalled at #3.

The Rolling Stones held for a second week at #4 with "Emotional Rescue" and Diana Ross slowed momentarily by staying at #5 for a second week with "Upside Down."

What Were The Big Movers?

After making modest chart gains for ten weeks Air Supply made a strong statement with their second hit when "All Out Of Love" bounded into the top ten from #21 up to #8. Irene Cara was also a new entry in the top ten with the theme song from the movie "Fame" climbing from #13 to #7.

Paul Simon made the biggest jump within the top 40. "Late In The Evening" rose 16 notches from #29 up to #13 in its third week. "You'll Accompn'y Me" by Bob Seger also made a double-digit leap within the top 40 moving from #37 to #26.

The song that made the biggest jump on the chart as a whole this week was "Xanadu" by Olivia Newton-John and Electric Light Orchestra. The theme song to the movie jumped twenty notches from #63 to #43. "Another One Bites The Dust" by Queen also made a strong jump from #67 to #50 in its second week.

A fair number of other songs made double-digit gains below the top 40 including "How Do I Survive" by Amy Holland (#69 to #56), "Never Knew Love Like This Before" by Stephanie Mills (#71 to #57), and "Who'll Be The Fool Tonight" by Larsen-Feiten Band (#88 to #75).

Having the largest fall on the chart for the week was the band Touch. Their song "(Call Me) When The Spirit Moves You" tumbled 35 notches from #65 down to the bottom at #100.

What Was New?

Another song from the movie soundtrack to Urban Cowboy was the highest debuting song of the week. "Look What You've Done To Me" by Boz Scaggs came in at #69.

No big hits entered the chart this week. None of them would make the top ten, and the only other future top 40 song was "I'm Almost Ready" by Pure Prairie League debuting at #79.

The rest of the new songs were "My Prayer" by Ray, Goodman & Brown, "Girl, Don't Let It Get You Down" by The O'Jays, "Thunder And Lightning" by Chicago, "Good Morning Girl/Stay Awhile" by Journey, "I Got You" by Split Enz, "You Can Call Me Blue" by Michael Johnson, and "Switchin' To Glide/This Beat Goes On" by The Kings.
