What Was On Top?

Olivia Newton-John spent a third consecutive week at number one with her hit from the Xanadu soundtrack. "Magic" was the singer's fourth number one hit.

Christopher Cross made a bid for the top spot with his second hit "Sailing" jumping from #5 up to #2. "Take Your Time (Do It Right)" by The S.O.S. Band inched up a spot from #4 to #3.

The Rolling Stones made a nice jump from #7 to #4 with "Emotional Rescue" and Diana Ross was looking to make some waves when "Upside Down" climbed from #10 up to #5.

What Were The Big Movers?

The first top 40 solo hit by Pete Townshend of The Who made a big ten-notch leap into the top ten. "Let My Love Open The Door" moved from #19 up to #9.

George Benson made the biggest jump within the top 40 as "Give Me The Night" climbed 18 spots from #33 all the way up to #15.

Three songs made double-digit jumps to reach the top 40. "Late In The Evening" by Paul Simon climbed 17 notches from #46 to #29. "You'll Accompn'y Me" by Bob Seger moved up twelve from #49 to #37. "Don't Ask Me Why" by Billy Joel soared up 18 spots from #57 to #39.

Double-digit climbers below the top 40 included "Jesse" by Carly Simon, "No Night So Long" by Dionne Warwick, "Xanadu" by Olivia Newton-John and Electric Light Orchestra, "Never Knew Love Like This Before" by Stephanie Mills, and "Red Light" by Linda Clifford.

Two songs tied for the biggest drop in the chart for the week. "Shandi" by Kiss and "Play The Game" by Queen each fell 29 notches.

What Was New?

The highest debuting song of the week was the third single from the Queen album The Game. "Another One Bites The Dust" entered the chart at #67.

None of the other new songs ended up being big hits. Songs that would go on to make the top 40 included "The Legend Of Wooley Swamp" by Charlie Daniels Band, "Who'll Be The Fool Tonight" by Larsen-Feiten Band, and "Out Here On My Own" by Irene Cara

The rest of the debut songs were "Late At Night" by England Dan Seals, "I Hear You Now" by Jon & Vangelis, "True Love Ways" by Mickey Gilley, "Treasure" by The Brothers Johnson, and "Games Without Frontiers" by Peter Gabriel.
