What Was On Top?

"Call Me" by Blondie remained at #1 for a third consecutive week. The song from the movie "American Gigolo" would become the band's biggest chart hit and the top song of the year 1980.

"Ride Like The Wind" by Christopher Cross remained at #2 for a second week, while "Lost In Love" by Air Supply made a strong move from #6 to #3. It was the first chart hit for both recording acts.

"With You I'm Born Again" by Billy Preston & Syreeta spent a third week at #4 in its 22nd week on the chart, while the former #1 song "Another Brick In The Wall" by Pink Floyd slipped a couple more spots to #5.

What Were The Big Movers?

There weren't many big movers within the top 40. The biggest was "The Rose" by Bette Midler which jumped ten spots from #39 to #29.

Robbie Dupree's first hit single "Steal Away" made the biggest leap within the chart. It climbed 26 notches from #59 up to #33. Also making a 20-notch jump was Paul McCartney. The future #1 song "Coming Up" climbed from #73 to #53.

A former top ten hit by Shalamar made the biggest drop within the chart. "The Second Time Around" had peaked at #8, but this week fell from #35 to #83.

What Was New?

There were nine new songs on the chart for the week, highlighted by two future top ten songs. The highest debut at #54 was "Against The Wind" by Bob Seger - the second single from the album of the same name. Coming in at #65 was "Little Jeannie" by Elton John, which would become his 17th top ten song.

Songs that would go on to make the top 40 were "Theme From New York, New York" (#76) by Frank Sinatra and "Answering Machine" (#82) by Pina Colada singer Rupert Holmes.

The other five new songs were "It's Not A Wonder" by the Little River Band, "Midnight Rendezvous" by The Babys, "Gone Too Far" by Eddie Rabbitt, "Just For The Moment" by Ray Kennedy, and "Real Love" by the Cretones.
