What Was On Top?

The Captain & Tennille patiently waited for 18 weeks, and their hit ballad "Do That To Me One More Time" finally made it to #1. They basically bookended their top 40 chart career with #1 songs, starting with "Love Will Keep Us Together" in 1975.

After spending four weeks at #1 "Rock With You" by Michael Jackson dropped to #5, while "Coward Of The County" and "Cruisin'" stalled at #3 and #4.

"Crazy Little Thing Called Love" by Queen seemed destined to hit the top soon, jumping from #5 to #2.

What Were The Big Movers?

"On The Radio" by Donna Summer jumped from #14 to #9 becoming her 10th (and 8th consecutive) top ten hit. "Desire" by Andy Gibb moved from #13 to #10 and became Gibb's sixth consecutive top ten hit. All his charting songs to date made the top ten.

"Another Brick In The Wall" made a big move within the top 40 from #32 to #18, as did "Second Time Around" by Shalamar (#33 to #20) and "How Do I Make You" by Linda Ronstadt (#35 to #23).

The biggest movers within the chart each jumped fifteen notches: "Come Back" by the J. Geils Band from #71 to #56, and "Lost In Love" by Air Supply from #81 to #66.

The biggest droppers each fell 35 spots: "Voices" by Cheap Trick and "You Know That I Love You" by Santana.

What Was New?

Twelve new songs debuted, and the highest was the title track from the Michael Jackson album "Off The Wall" which came in at #53. Several big hits entered the chart, the biggest being the future number one hit "Call Me" by Blondie. Other future top ten songs debuting were "Ride Like The Wind" by Christopher Cross, "Sexy Eyes" by Dr. Hook and "Cars" by Gary Numan. A couple other future hits were "Brass In Pocket" by The Pretenders and "What I Like About You" by The Romantics.

The rest of the new songs were "Voice Of Freedom" by Jim Kirk, "Women" by Foreigner, "Small Paradise" by John Cougar, "Desire" by the Rockets, and "You Are My Heaven" by Roberta Flack & Donny Hathaway.
